Personal information

  • Born in Lisbon around 1195 and died in Padua in 1231 to dropsy.
  • His original name was Fernando Martín de Bulhões e Tavira Azevedo.

Education

  • Started to study in the local cathedral school.
  • Later on, he entered the Agustinian Abby in Lisbon suburbs where he studied the Sacred Scriptures, theology by the latin doctors of the church and latin classic writtings as Ovideo and Seneca.
  • To continue his education, he entered the Agustinian Monastery in Coímbra.

Turning point in his life

  • In 1220, the murdered of three Franciscan priests and two friers in Morocco had such a strong impact on him that he left the Agustinian order to move to the Franciscan one.
  • In 1221 he met Saint Francis of Assisi.
  • In 1222, his sermons become popular. Saint Francis ask him to teach theology to the order friers as well as fight againts heresy in France, therefore he travelled preaching the south of France and the north of Italy.
  • During his last years, he archieved success as preacher, being recogniced by the papal court. His daily sermons had to be celebrated outdoors due to the multitudes wanting to hear him .

Miracles

  • One night, the Baby Jesus presented himself to him in his cell meanwhile he was praying. They say that he used to hold the Baby Jesus in his arms at nights.
  • His sermons where so good that even fishes where able to undestand them.
  • He made kneel a mule before the Sacred form.
  • He could be in two different places at the same time.
  • He dissipated a storm in course of a preaching.

Curious facts

  • He passed away at the age of 35 or 36 years.
  • He was canonized just 352 days right after passing away.
  • He changed his original name after moving orders to honour Anthony the Great, who was venerated in the chapel of one of the places he lived.
  • He is commemorated on June 13th, the day he passed away.

Did you know…

  • They built a basilica in Padua to bury him.
  • After 30 years of his death, his sarcophagus was open and they discovered that his body was corrupted but his tongue, fact that made increase the devotion in the saint.
